Best for Last

In my last post--I shared a sneak peak of the nursery. Well, it's been a long time since I posted again because I've been awfully busy because..........we finally adopted a precious baby boy! His name is Jacob Mateo and he's the biggest blessing we could ever hope for.
All of that to say that this is my best and my last post for a while! I don't want to miss a minute with my son, so the blog is just going on hold indefinitely. So, here are some pictures of the finished nursery--and of the most beautiful baby ever!!!! In my opinion :).

He was born on September 7th, and we brought him home on the 11th. These pictures were taken right at one month. You can also click here to see his one month photo shoot with Sara Parker (friend and photographer). They are soooooooo cute!
It has been so fun to join the blogging community—and I will definitely continue to enjoy other’s blogs. So, thanks for those of you who have followed me!!!

Nursery Sneak Peak

Well, I promised you all a sneak peak of the nursery (in case you just tuned in, my husband and I are hoping to adopt our first child sometime soon, and are getting the nursery ready since adoption can be a last minute thing)...so here are a few pics:

Oh, and we’re trying to keep it gender neutral since we’re open to adopting either a boy or a girl (how are we doing on that?).

This beautiful fabric was the inspiration for the whole room. Ben’s mom made the crib bedding—this is the crib skirt.

My mom gave us this chair which I had recovered, and the pillow is made from a New Guinea flour sack which my in-laws brought back with them when they moved back to the States many years ago. The alligator is just cute, and we got him at IKEA this weekend.

My mom bought us some beautiful animal prints that are currently being framed, so you’ll have to stay tuned for those, and we can’t figure out how to put the crib together, so no pics of that until my brother-in-law comes over to help us (they gave us their old crib). So you can see that everyone is pitching in to help us out, including my dear friend Stacy, from Green Seed Creations. Check out this post on her blog to see what she did to an old liquor cabinet, in order to turn it in to a changing table and then peruse the rest of her activities—she has some very cute stuff for sale, and also does custom pieces. Hmmm, that makes me think maybe I should see if she would help me do my first blog give-away…

This Life I Live

Hello friends! Sorry for the prolonged silence. I went to Mexico for a month--one of the perks of being a Spanish teacher is study abroad trips! (more on that soon). I am finally starting to get back in the groove, and get back to blogging!

But the purpose of this post is to introduce you to the new and improved blog of one of my friends, Danielle. It's called, This Life I Live and it started as a blog about her and her husband's adoption journey--they adopted two beautiful sisters from Ethiopia. But now it's become a chronicle of their lives and all the fun and struggles and joy. She also does some pretty great give-aways (in fact I'm totally bummed that I didn't win this week's giveaway--pics by Sara Parker--my favorite lifestyle photographer!). So, check her out when you've got the time.

And, speaking of adoption, I should have a sneak peak of the nursery soon...Ben finally let me really start working on it, even though we're still waiting. Yay! It's gonna be cute, so stay tuned!

When the Husband's Away, the Wife Will Play

Last night one of my other decor-addicted friends, Elizabeth, and I stayed up until 1 in the morning playing at our mutual friend Liz's house. You see, Liz's sweet husband is away for the weekend, so we took the opportunity change up a few things in her house.

Although our main task was to help her think about re-decorating the master bedroom, Elizabeth, who has self-diagnosed Room A.D.D. had us moving furniture in the dining room, living room, and re-dressing the bed in the guest room as well.

The funniest moment, however, is when we headed to the back room, which is currently a laundry room/art space/catch-all, and hidden away, back in the furthest reaches of the house, Elizabeth spies a large, beautiful, antiquey/whimsical framed map of Italy (a gift from one of Liz's co-workers, reminiscent of Liz's family background) and exclaims with delight, "I love this map! It's gorgeous!" Liz goes on to say how much she and her husband like it as well to which Elizabeth responds, "Oh great idea Liz, take the cutest picture in your whole house, and be sure to hang it where no one will ever see it!" Poor Liz, they thought they had found a nice place of honor for it, (behind the kitchen on the way out the back door). So, we decided to place it in the M.B. and we think it should become the inspiration piece for the rest of the room.

Now to decide on a new paint color for the walls...we suggested a light grey, but Liz was worried about gray evoking thoughts of prisons. So, here are a few pics (via Houzz) that I hope will change her mind about gray.

I'm Back!

Hello friends! Sorry for such a long silence, but we've been on a rather extended vacation. Since the end of May, I've hit the big city (NYC), the beach (Outer Banks) and the mountains (Asheville). What a treat! I'm not bragging, I'm really just thankful that I get some time off in the summer, and so I try to take full advantage of it! Anyway, since we just returned from the mountains, I thought I would post on one of my favorite stores in Asheville....The Screen Door. They have the most interesting and unique collection of incredible art and antiques! I try to go at least once every time I'm home--but this week I actually found myself there THREE different times! I know--I'm addicted.

So here are some pics (you all know that photography is not my gift!) that I took of my favorite booth! I'm getting some inspiration for the future nursery-to-be...

I know it's not particularly babyish--it's just the over-all impression that I like--certain elements of the room. So, what do you think? Could these goodies lead to a nature-inspired nursery that's fun, rough and sophisticated all at the same time?

A Nursery

Well, the semester has ended, and I'm back to my fun with design...

As most of you know, Ben and I have been on a bit of a journey to start our family. We've finally been approved with our adoption agency, and are now officially waiting! Ben has wisely decreed that I must not purchase anything for the nursery-to-be until there is actually a baby to bring home, but...that does not mean that I can't go ahead and decide exactly what I want so that when we get that phone call, I'm ready to go! So, I convinced him to peruse some kids rooms on Ohdeedo, and below I've posted my top picks and his top picks. What do you think? Any favorites? Any ideas of how to combine some elements from each? Any other suggestions?

Well, DIA has come and gone, and it was a great success! I’m waiting on some more pictures, and a video, but these will have to do for now. My favorite part of the whole celebration really was the diversity—we had all ages, shapes, sizes and colors. It was great! Nothing better to celebrate than children, culture and books! We had some fabulous performers, and my students did an excellent job with the bilingual story-time. Bravo!

South of Market

I went to Charleston last weekend for the day with my friend Elizabeth, and we had a lovely time. We mostly just walked around town looking at the beautiful houses and gardens, and imagining what it would be like to live like that. We also happened upon two beautiful stores on King St. The first, South of Market, was gorgeous! I wanted everything in the store--but it was a bit out of my price range.

The other shop, Lily, doesn't offer a lot yet on their website, but they do have a cute blog that gives you a taste of her classic and fabulous style.

Join us for DIA (Diversity in Action)—a free, fun-filled festival celebrating children and culture through books. Enter the Storybook House or “Casa de Cuentos” for an afternoon of adventure. Your children will participate in interactive storytelling in English and Spanish, as well as dancing, music, crafts and food from many different cultures.

Asheville Art

Thanks goodness it's Spring break! The winter doldrums are starting to clear as I have one daffodil blooming and one iris! There are many tulips popping up as well, but no blooms yet. As inspiring as the Spring weather is, you all know that I'm always inspired when I get a chance to head up to Asheville for a little visit back home. Not only is it refreshing to see my family (and my most adorable nephews!), but I always try to hit a few art galleries while I'm downtown to keep an eye out for something fresh to post here.

And my last trip did not disappoint. I found two artists that I really like. The first, Maggie Hopper, has made it difficult to copy pictures from her website, so the little bitty pics will have to give you a taste until you can head on over to her site to check her out for yourself.

And for the second Kristie Taylor, I don't believe the photos do justice to her work, so I'm only posting two shots.

They look better in these shots from a distance, than they do in the shots up close, but seeing them in person would be better. Oh well, at least you get the idea. What do you think--are their stars on the rise? I hope so. Enjoy.

I've just discovered the cutest little website. One of my students and I are planning an event called DIA (Diversity In Action) to celebrate diversity, children and literacy. A friend has connected me with the designer of this website Maria Palito who does all her own graphic design, and sells super cute stuff for kids! Jewelry, dolls, illustrations and more. She's amazing!

Lacking Inspiration Where Design is Concerned

I'm trying to post something, but I just have nothing creative and inspiring to post regarding the design world. Right now my mind is swimming with thoughts of Performance Based Assessments for my students, the 50 compositions I still have left to grade, and the inspiring, yet difficult topic of Critical Race Theory.

Will you all abandon me if I begin to rant about some of the injustices I'm learning about as I delve into the world of language and literacy, looking at how power and position-even with regards to something as seemingly simple as language--affect our public schools and society at large? I imagine you will, therefore I will just briefly mention this book.

Racial inequality is not a topic for the faint of heart, but this book has caught my attention! Each time I pick it up and begin reading I think, "Critical Race Theory--where have you been all my life?!?" And why aren't we talking about it more and thinking about how to solve problems of racism in our country?

Well, that's all I'll say about that. Thanks for humoring me. I'll try to make my next post about something pretty!

A Good Cause

As you may remember, Ben and I are in the process of trying to adopt. And while we are excited about this, there are many challenges along the way, one large one being the financial aspect. Thankfully, our money is already provided for, but we have some good friends who are also trying to adopt. Our pastor's wife, Stacy from the blog Blessed Chaos, is making these cool wreaths to raise money for their adoption. The One That Got Away

Have you ever missed a golden opportunity to be on the cutting edge of design before anyone else? You were flipping through a magazine and thought, "I saw a (fill-in-the-blank) just like that two years ago! I should have gotten it when I had the chance." Well, that doesn't happen too often, but these chairs:

I see them everywhere!

Let me just tell you. In the first house we ever rented. Our landlord was a homewrecker. Literally, he tore down buildings for a living, and often got to salvage whatever happened to be left in the building before destroying it. He also stored many of these "treasures" in the shed in our backyard/junkyard. He must have had 50 of these cool aluminum chairs he had gotten when one of the state mental hospitals closed down (creepy, I know). Anyhow, we thought they were the coolest and used them in our house. When we moved out, I wanted to keep some, but in the hustle and bustle, never got around to asking him (although I highly doubt he would have noticed if a few had gone missing.)

Well, now that I keep an eye on what's in style, I kick myself every time I see one of these chairs in a designer magazine! Oh well, c'est la vie.

Hand-Painted Lovelies

I was browsing one of my regular reads, Bloesem, when one of her ads actually caught my eye. She always posts the most unique and beautiful things. So I clicked on the link, and found the piece that had caught my eye, this adorable Victorian Row House storage container.

I put it in my cart and contemplated where I could use it in my house, then I went to default, when I can't justify buying it for myself and thought, "Who I could buy it for?" (Because gifts don't really count when you're spending money, right?) Then I remembered one reason I started this blog. Because I don't have a lot of space left in my house, so instead of buying the cute things I see, I could start posting them for others to see and enjoy.

So, happily, and with animal shopper's instinct under control, I continued to browse and found these other hand-painted fabulous finds. Perhaps I can tempt you to purchase one for your home...or maybe you could buy it as a gift!

The Yellow Wallpaper

Okay---here it is.....the dreaded classroom with the yellow wallpaper. Please tell me if I'm being overly dramatic, but can you imagine being able to pay attention in this room?

School's in!

Well, it's officially back to school for me this week as teaching started today and learning started last week (although I do just as much learning when I'm teaching, as I do when I'm supposed to be learning). And let me tell you, there were a few serious impediments to my learning last week! Stay tuned, and I will post a picture of the most horrific classroom I have ever seen!

I hope I won't be disappearing like I did last semester. I'm going to try to post at least once a week so my few blogging buddies don't forget all about me!

A Garden For Your Feet

On the brighter side

My last post was a little heavy, and now I'm kind of embarrased that I shared so much. So, this next post is a little "lighter".

In Florida for Christmas, my mother-in-law was inspired by my IKEA post. She decided that my gift would be to take me to that glorious heaven of Scandanavian design for the day (and not rush me like some people did!) and give me $100.00 to spend. What a great gift! The closest one to them is in Tampa, about an hour away.

The main thing I bought was this light which I'm planning on putting in our office (which will hopefully become our nursery one day).

So my question is this: is it weird to put a light like this in an office/bedroom? What do you design-junkies think?

The funny thing about our trip was that we took our time, looked at everything upstairs, ate lunch, looked at everything downstairs, and then when we had completely had our fill of IKEA, we got ready to go. We headed out to the car, parcels in hand, and I couldn't find my keys! So, we went back in, I went to lost and found (and those of you that have been there, know that there's no quick and easy way to get around--that place is HUGE!)

After finding no keys, and climbing onto the hood of my car to try to see if my keys were anywhere visible in the car, we got my brother-in-law to call Triple A to see if they would come (just hoping they were somehere in the car so my husband would not have to drive out an hour during rush hour traffic to bring me the spare key). We went back inside, got a frozen yogurt and a tray of cinnamon buns, and waited. Thankfully, when the Triple A man arrived and broke into our car, they were sitting just where I'd left them, underneath the IKEA catalog!!!

Needless to say, I got more than I ever wanted of IKEA--but we had a great time and we enjoyed our adventure together. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it!

A Journey of Healing

Generally my blog is all about home decor, and not too much about me. But today I felt like sharing what's really going on and why I haven't felt like posting lately. I suppose it's very strange to post personal things on a website that anyone can read, but I'm hoping it will be somewhat therapeutic, and maybe some of you out there can relate.

My husband and I have been trying to start a family now for what feels like forever, and other than our two beautiful dogs, have had no success.

We've finally decided to move forward with adoption, but after the disappointments we've faced so far, that is a huge step for us and a giant leap of faith. Although mentally I am excited about the prospect of adopting a beautiful child, inside I'm still grieving the heartbreaks and disappointments we have encountered along the way.

Since I have a month off between semesters (one of the many benefits of being a poor teacher!), Ben and I traveled down to Florida to see his family, and then made the trek up to Asheville, NC to see mine.

While we were in Asheville, I had determined to take a personal retreat. Last fall, my brother took me to a beautiful chapel somewhere in the mountains called Quiet Reflections, and I knew that would be the perfect place to get away. So, I took off up the mountain, even though there had been a foot of snow the week before, and I didn't know the conditions of the roads, or if it would even be open. On the way I enjoyed the beautiful lakes and rivers, chilled by the remaining heaps and drifts of snow. As I neared my destination, I realized that the roads were not as clear as I had hoped. And when I turned onto the steep, winding dirt road that would lead me to my place of quiet retreat, I began to notice snowy, icy patches. Still, I persevered! Not far from the top, I spotted a man up ahead who looked like he was taking care of the property (truly the quintessential mountain man, long bushy beard, over-alls, banged up truck and all). Fearing the worst, I rolled down my window and shouted to him, "Is the chapel closed?" He assured me it wasn't, but that I would probably want to park at the retreat house, and then walk the rest of the way up to the chapel. It was then that I thought about the shoes I was wearing...

I suppose I hadn't truly prepared for my journey. But nothing was to stop me this day. I needed to kneel before God and seek healing for my pitiful, tired out heart.

As I slogged my way through the mud and snow, the crisp mountain air and the chilling wind began to invigorate me (even as the snow and ice was quickly numbing my toes). And as soon as I reached the chapel, I knew it would be worth it. It was just as humble and majestic as I had remembered. As you approach the door, it appears to be nothing more than a tiny, unassuming, log cabin.

But as you enter through the heavy wooden doors, you are greeted with majestic splendor. A giant window overlooks all of God's creation as if to remind you of your own profound insignificance. I bowed in awe and worship, and what followed was a time of deep sadness, and great comfort. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Matthew 5:4

I can't say that I truly understand how comfort, even the comfort of the Lord is a blessing, in light of the pain of mourning, but I do hope to one day understand. And although my heart still aches for ungranted hopes, dreams and desires, in that small mountain chapel, in the face of all creation and majesty, I once again gave these dreams back to the Lord, for He knows me and cares for me.

It is my prayer that He will surprise us with blessings beyond what we can imagine, ("I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jer. 29:11. But in the meantime, I continue this journey, often troublesome and wearying, but sometimes full of beauty, wonder and delight.

Nina Campbell

This is the coolest wallpaper from Nina Campbell's Spring 09 collection. Amazing designer, and marketing genius, she has her own line of wallpaper, furniture, home accessories, etc. And it's all lovely. See for yourself.

I know it's hard to do wallpaper well, but her designs make me want to at least try! She has translated many of her wallpaper designs into fabric--great idea for those less inclined to try pasting something to your wall.

I guess my penchant for fabric and patterns really comes through in this post, but I just love her bold, unique designs. Yummy to my eyes!

Chloe Warner

So last week I got inspired, and then I got busy. So, here's the first installment of my new plan.

Chloe Warner of Redmond Aldrich Designs (also an editor for Lucky magazine) caught my eye with this particular bedroom ensemble.

A Harvard graduate, Ms. Warner is clearly very talented. I think I was drawn the eclectic, yet traditional nature of this design. I love the interesting bird lamps, and their cheery yellow. I am also a sucker for patterned drapes. So, I checked out this lovely designer a little further, and realized that this very pic, really does epitomize her style. You will see the same type of fabric, throughout many of her designs. She seems to love florals and birds. Kind of a twist on your grandmother's style.

So, to be honest, after checking out her webpage, I wasn't totally in love with all of her work, but I did really like the room posted below.

Friend Heroin and a New Inspiration

So, my three best friends from high school were here this weekend and let me tell you--we had an awesome time! In fact, it was like a triple shot of friend heroin. They left at 1:00 today and now I'm going through serious withdrawal! You forget how much fun you have with people that you don't get to see regularly, so then when you finally get to see them, you feel their absence that much more!

So one of my dear friends, Tara, gave me a great belated birthday present--the Domino Book of Decorating, and I'm so excited!

So I've gotten re-inspired for my blog. I'm starting a list of every designer from this book that inspires me in some way, then I'm going to research them further and post all of their coolest designs. I feel kind of like Julie from Julie and Julia (great movie!). But instead of french recipes, I'm going to post about fabulous designers! I see all of these great designers highlighted on my fellow design blogs, and most of them I've never heard of--so I'm going to educate myself. Now I know you're just dying with curiosity to see who's going to be featured first...but you'll have to wait until tomorrow (or sometime this week).

Office Envy

I spend so much time these days in my office, that I often get distracted thinking about how I wish I could really re-decorate it. One of my good friends helped me rearrange (and I put up my super cool curtains from IKEA) and it made a huge difference! But I really want to start over from scratch. Here's a nice office from Pottery Barn. I think I would definitely get more work done if I had a new desk! But why is mine always sooooo much more cluttered than this!? Oh, I know, because I don't live inside a magazine! Oh well, some day...

Windsor Smith

As I'm busily procrastinating my homework, I decided to take a few much needed minutes to try to catch up on my blog reading. And as La Dolce Vita has become a staple for me (as for most of you I'm sure), I really liked the room she posted today by Windsor Smith, and so I investigated her page, and was not disappointed. Paloma chose one of her rooms from the "Mandeville Bungalow." The first picture I've posted is another shot from the same house, and the next two are from the "Beach House." I hope you enjoy them as much I did.

I'm no longer an IKEA virgin

A while ago I mentioned that I finally made my maiden voyage to Ikea. Now for those of you design professionals who live in your big fancy cities where you're practically tripping over shops with fabulous with cutting edge design, this might not be very meaningful to you. In fact, you might not even be that impressed with Ikea at all. But for those of us living in third world countries, such as Columbia, SC, relatively devoid of all fashion and style, it is a BIG deal to finally have an Ikea within close driving distance.

So, on my last trip though Charlotte, I dragged my loving husband with me to experience the wonderland of Scandanavian design. And let me tell you--it did not disappoint! Just driving up to the big blue and yellow building was an awe-inspiring event.

I knew that good, affordable design was finally within reach. Walking through the doors was an exhilirating sensation, although I was slightly disoriented by the enormity of the building. We headed upstairs to the showroom (other friends had made the pilgrimage before us and brought back tales of the expansive display of home delight and perfection) where let me tell you, I was NOT disappointed. I began to skip and dance through the rooms as an unspeakable joy coursed through my veins. (I really did dance through the rooms until I ran into a stranger who didn't seem quite as entranced as I, and in fact thought it was odd to see a 30 year old woman skipping about like a small child at FAO Schwarz).

As I made my way through room after perfect room, sitting on every hip, cool, mod, fabulous chair, opening drawer after drawer of slick modern storage compartments on super cool wheelie thingies, I realized that my entire home needs redecorating. I mean, why not? It's so affordable!

After about 30 minutes of wandering through the maze of modern, fabulous chicness, my husband said to me, "You've got about 20 more minutes til I'm done with this." What? I've only just begun! I could stay here another 3 hours! How could he not understand that this was the happiest I've felt in weeks.

And so, I raced through the rest of the showroom breathless with wonder and delight (also because I really was practically running), so as not to miss a single thing. I was patting myself on the back as I headed down the escalator because at least I'd managed to see everything, only to be confronted by another whole level with millions of other must-have items that would make my life so much better! And so, I swore to myself that I would be back soon when no one could stop me from soaking in every drop of the marvel that is Ikea.

I came out with only this set of curtains, which I love! I'm putting them in our office and wondering what accent color I'm going to use since they are so neutral. Right now I'm thinking a deep purplish red, the color of my red shamrocks. What do you guys think?

Just in case anyone is wondering why I haven't posted in a while, it's because I will never catch up on all of my reading for classes long enough to have a creative thought!!! Someone please inspire me and give me a good idea for a post.

I'd like to post on the fact that I finally made my maiden voyage to IKEA, but I don't think I can do it justice right now. So, maybe if I can finish one of the 3 books and 5 million journal articles I have to read by next Saturday, I'll attempt it. (I'm sorry if this is sounding too whiny.)

The books I'm reading aren't quite this picturesque, but you get the idea. Someone, please inspire me!

Unique Style

Once again, my turquoise friend (okay, we've never met, but I really like her blog, so I think of her as my friend) has introduced me to someone cool. On a recent post she featured some photography of Joanna Henderson, but true to her obsession, she only posted the aqua elements. So I followed her link to Joanna Henderson, and was intrigued by some of her other rooms. And being the equal opportunity color appreciator that I am, I thought I'd feature them here.

What style would you call this? It's such a nice mix of styles that it's a little hard to classify. Maybe some of you real designers could enlighten me. Any thoughts?

Any Phoebe Howard Fans?

Thanks to some fabulous blog out there, I'm sorry I don't remember which one, I was turned on to the designs of Phoebe Howard. I checked out her website and found her style to be beautiful, yet also versatile. The ones I've featured here have some definite similarities in color and style, because those are the ones that appealed to me. But I really liked how she is able to create many varied looks, some bold, graphic, fresh and new. Others more classic and traditional. Still others very simple and/or artsy. Ms. Howard's got something for everyone. How do you like these?

Here I'm drawn to the softness of the pink.

The Blogosphere Made me Feel Better

When I saw this picture, I thought, "It must have been taken before everything happened! She looks way too happy and carefree." But it's true. Everything that happens does make us stronger if we let it. And today this made me feel a little bit better.

And something that made me feel a lot better were all the belly laughs I got while scrolling through and reading Mabel's House. It started with "Tyler Florence Nearly Made Me Barf." As I laughed out loud my husband had to come in to the office to see what I was laughing about. Then I came across this picture...

...and the belly laughed turned into a guffaw.

And by the time I got to "Sleeping With the Enemy" I had erupted into furious giggles so that I could hardly read the post out loud to Ben who was also giggling along with me.

Recently I posted about a friend who just bought a new house, and needed inspiration. Well, I have another friend who just bought her first house and has painted the kitchen a VERY bright yellow. She wants help knowing what else to do with it. I suggested using black and white as accents, but she also wants to work in red to match her dishes. I have some good friends who just bought their first house, and she's trying to figure out what to do with it. So, I was looking through House Beautiful and Elle Decor (the old stand-bys) to try to give her some ideas. (I like to pretend like I know how to advise in these matters.) She doesn't know exactly what her style is, but based on her fabulous fashion sense, I'd say some form of eclectic, bohemian, artsy style. Do you have any suggestions for other good websites to check for this style? These were some of my ideas...

I was inspired to check out the work of Sarah Richardson when I saw some of her turquoise rooms posted on none other than House of Turquoise. Since she delightfully showcased the best of the aqua, I thought I'd bring you some of the other beauties that I loved. I think what made each of these rooms jump out at me are the different fabrics she uses. What stands out to you?

But I was reading my daily blogs the other day and Paloma over at La Dolce Vita (one of my favorites) posted about her dish dilemma. She's tired of her plain white dishes. So, since I LOVE my dishes, I thought I'd try to to showcase them for you. Well, it's an attempt!

You might think that would get old, but nay, I've been following this blog for a few weeks now, and the color has yet to bore me. Maybe because it is such a soothing color. I was going through an old issue of Domino (sigh, it is no more) and I came across the work of Mae Mougin, incredibly talented ceramist. All her work is beautiful, but I just loved these plates! The simplicity gives them such timeless class.

And if you're really head-over-heels for monograms, consider personalizing an old chair you've been thinking about re-covering.

While Ben and I were in Saluda, we couldn't resist a quick trip up to Asheville to see my parents and my brother and nephew. And of course, I can't go into town without stopping at a few of my favorite spots downtown. So, here are a few art pieces that I enjoyed.

I'm Back!!

Just in case any of you have noticed that I haven't posted in a while--it's because I've been on a few trips. First I went to Richmond for the weekend to celebrate a friend's 40th birthday! It was a great time, and I have a few pics to document the event. You can also check out her blog Blessed Chaos as I'm sure she'll be posting on the entire weekend soon.

We started off Friday morning with an incredible breakfast. Marjorie's mom treated us like we were at a fine B&B (she could definitely start a new career if she wanted to). In fact, when we arrived, she had chocolates on our pillows and fresh flowers by all the beds. What a treat!

Then when Marjorie mentioned Anthropologie, we sprang from the table to get ready (we are deprived living in Columbia, SC of most good shopping).

The next day we started at Agecroft Hall. It's a beautiful Tudor style home with a long history that was moved to Richmond from England, and it had the most delightful gardens.

Stacy was most excited to tour the antique mall (and as you can see, I dragged myself along). I would love an antique stove (if had all of the modern amenities!).

We finished the day with a gourmet meal cooked by Marjorie's sister, which we enjoyed outside in her beautiful yard.

We certainly had a wonderful time and I must say Marjorie has an incredible family. Everyone (including her) has a true gift for hospitality. Richmond is a beautiful city, and I would love to go back and see even more! We only had time to scratch the surface.

After arriving home Sunday evening, Ben and I turned around and headed up to Saluda, NC for our 6th anniversary...more on that later.

If you want to have a room as beautiful as these, you should consider bringing in natural elements with texture and interest. The table and chairs (below) are made from reclaimed railroad ties, and the nesting tables are also reclaimed wood. They seem like a perfect blend of rustic, with a modern feel. And speaking of green, if you haven't seen Samantha Pynn's show Pure Style on HGTV, it's by far the best one on right now in my opinion. She has beautiful taste, and tries to bring in as many earth friendly elements as possible, without sacrificing style.

This post is not a piece of cake, even though these cupcakes are sold to raise money for breast cancer research.

Tuesday's To-Do is:

Encourage someone who's going through cancer.

Sometimes it's hard to know what to do when friends and family go through something difficult, so it's easier to just avoid them. After going through the intense battle with my husband's cancer, which was complicated by a stroke as well, I can tell you--ANYTHING you do will be appreciated, except ignoring or avoiding them. Send a card or some flowers--it really helps. Bring a meal, or just a cappuccino from Starbuck's. Whatever little thing you can do to brighten their day, just do it---even if it's hard for you. And don't just say, "Let me know if you need anything!" Just pitch in and do something, don't wait for them to ask.

My first inspiring feature (and I guess I'm a little biased) is my husband's blog, Why I Survive. This picture is from one of his posts about how his friends on his ultimate frisbee team raised money by selling personalized discs. His life inspires me, and I know his blog is inspiring many others as he deals with the effects of brain surgery, lung and stomach surgery, stroke, chemo etc. If you want to be encouraged, check out his blog.

This video is from this week's episode of "So You Think You Can Dance", and it's about a woman's fight with breast cancer. It's beautiful to see the strength they both portray.

Or be encouraged by Lance Armstrong and the amazing work he's doing to fight testicular cancer.

I know that cancer has touched almost all of our lives, some of us in bigger ways than others, but we're all in this race together, and your friends who are going through something this difficult, need you there to encourage them across the finish line.

Have a great day and I hope this post isn't a downer, it was meant to challenge and inspire.

Interesting Headboards

I'm not totally thrilled with our headboard, and have been thinking about covering it. It has a metal frame, but I've thought about trying to upholster it. I came across these three headboards, and liked them all for different reasons.

This one, from Martha Stewart, is a nice contrast with the linens. I actually think I'm drawn more to the linens than the headboard itself, now that I think about it.

Here, I just like the colors, and it looks like she's taken wall paper, and cut it out in the shape of a headboard. Definitely cost-effective and easy.

Here I think I'm drawn to the shape and the colors. Found at Better Homes and Gardens, I love the interplay between the many different patterns. Somehow it all seems to work.

I used to LOVE baking! Then my husband and I went through a vegan phase after his cancer, and it kind of sucked all of the fun out of food--period. So, after about a year of that, we gave up and went back to our old ways. But, my cooking just hasn't been the same. Anyway, I thought these were fun and festive, how about you?

Birthday at the Zoo

We had a blast today at the zoo. You can see my sweet nephew having a great time at the start, but by the third picture, at the very end of the day (after no nap and 95 degree weather), you might notice he's starting to unravel. Following that shot, he had a melt-down, signaling that it was time to head home. It was still such a treat to have a visit! I'm so blessed to have a great visit from my family, and so many friends called today. I sure hope this is a year full of blessings!

I think my favorite gift was a set of four of these states glasses from my Mom. She gave me NC, SC, FL, and NY. This is the design on the SC glass. More than anything it was just fun to spend time together.

Birthday Beauties

The day before my birthday started out just great. I received these lovely flowers--thanks Amanda Panda--then went shopping with my husband (this is a rare treat, I usually can't convince him to come along). And then some of my girlfriends took me out for the night. I made the comment not too long ago that I wish I could live in a musical. Don't you think life would be a lot more fun if everyone were spontaneously bursting forth into song and dance numbers?!! I do! So, they took me to see a Town Theater production of Beauty and the Beast. Then we had my favorite, strawberry shortcake! Thanks girls!

Now my family's coming into town tomorrow (I guess it's actually today since I'm writing this late at night), and we're going to the zoo. If I get any great shots of my sweet little nephew, I'll post tomorrow.

That is exactly what I thought the first time I came across Kate’s website called Sensational Color which is one of the best sites on colour in the industry! Kate was also my mentor at The Color Marketing Group Conference I attended in April and I’m thrilled to feature her in my blog:

[MK] What is your favourite colour?
[KS ] “I love the colours of water especially the blue-greens. From the darkest, most mysterious teal to vivid turquoise to soothing, subtle aqua. Maybe being born on the cusp of Aquarius (the water-bearer) and Pisces (the fish) predisposed me to being a lover of the oceanic hues.
When Ellen Kennon invited me to be one of 16 designers to have a colour included in her Full Spectrum paint line I chose a complex neutral toned blue-green as my signature hue and gave it the name 'H2 Ahh!' I thought the colour and the name captured how the water-inspired hue soothes my soul and quiets my mind.

[MK] What colour would you like to see banished from all paint decks?
[KS] In the hands of a professional I don't think any colours need to be banished plus hundreds of colours look just beautiful on the rack in the store. However, it could be helpful for the average DIYer if about half of the colours were eliminated, leaving just those that are most likely to work well in the typical home. As counter-intuitive as it might seem for many people when choosing colours more choices = less confidence. Of course people who feel overwhelmed or confused by the process can always call a professional colour consultant to help them find the perfect colours.

Change the world one shipping container at a time.

This is the most exciting and innovative idea I've heard about in a long time! You absolutely must visit the SEED project blog and see how they are reusing shipping containers to make affordable and incredible housing for people displaced after hurricanes.

I heard a brief segment about them on NPR today and thought I'd just check it out. Then when I saw these pictures I got so excited about what could be done. You see, they are taking these used abandoned shipping containers that are littering the harbors in the Caribbean and making them into homes. I'm still in awe of this incredible idea!

Okay, you'll have to forgive my poor photography skills, but I have to show you a project I just finished for my nephew. His bedroom has a slight camping theme, so I thought this would be cute.

The best thing about the letters is that I decoupaged a real map of our town onto them. So, I actually managed to fit his street, and our street and the park we always take him to, and other meaningful spots onto the letters. One day, they'll be a keepsake for him as well as cool wall art.

These other items would be fun to add to little boy's room or for outdoor fun.

Each of these rooms caught my eye with their use of bold fabric patterns. I think textiles might be my favorite part of decorating. Which of the three do you like best?

This headboard features such unique fabric, and the white walls allow it to remain the focal point.

Here it's a toss-up between the shutters and the spread.

But I think this one is my favorite. I'm a sucker for vintage fabrics.

Why everyone needs an outdoor room

If you're lucky enough to have an outdoor room, you've got to make use of these fabulous finds. If you don't, then you've got to create one so you can have one more space to furnish! We have the worst, tiniest little back porch in all of creation (old houses in our neighborhood often have the washer and dryer outside on the porch), but I put down a carpet and hung a paper lantern over the washing machine. Anything to beautify the space.

Sewing Hope

She is leaving for Uganda tomorrow to spend the next two months working with the incredible non-profit organization she started called Sewing Hope. Lately I've really been on an art kick, and whenever I go home to Asheville, I have certain galleries, and certain art within those galleries that I like to visit. Here are some of the artists I like from a newer gallery called Atelier.

These two paintings are by an artist called Deonna. I bought one of her little bitty pieces--it was just too cute to resist.

The next two photographs are by a documentary photographer Jill Snyder. The series being showcased at Atelier are from her work in the Appalachian mountainas (home sweet home) where she documents traditional mountain music and dance.

And these pieces are for the wall, but they are more like sculpture done by Heather Knight of Element Clay Studios. I love the funky modern textures. I've linked to all of their webpages where you can see more information about each of them.

"Emerging"

These paintings are the beautiful and innovative work of husband and wife team Signe and Genna Grushovenko. I fell in love with them last time I was in Asheville when I saw them at 16 Patton, one of Asheville's many delightful art galleries. Since then I have been trying to figure out how I can afford one (and where I would put it). Right now I'm angling for a joint birthday/Christmas present--we'll see what happens. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this interesting style as much as I do, and you can check out their website Artists i n Residence to find out more about the unique process they use. Essentially, Genna (husband) creates the underlayer, while Signe (wife) bases the pictures on old photos taken from daily Southern life.

"Gee's Bend Homage" is one of the more traditional Americana-esque paintings, which is not my typical style, but in person it is truly outstanding!

"Ladies Aid" for some reason is my favorite, even though the colors aren't quite as vivid as some of their other work.

If only there were a fourth, "Cloud Sisters" would be an older version of my best friends from "Lunch Club" (more on them later).

Okay, this is my first attempt at posting designy type things. I've been obsessed with some fabulous design blogs I've been scouring as of late, which were the other part of my inspiration to start this wannabe blog. So my latest fascination is kid rooms because they are soooo fun! You can do all sorts of things with them that you can't really do in the rest of your house. (Maybe also because I've been designing our imaginary future child's room in my mind for the last few years since we've been on this long, unexpectedly difficult and currently still unfruitful journey toward parenthood.) Anyhoo, a few of the cute wall art possibilities I've seen...Any takers?

South of the Border???

I just got back from a trip to the Outer Banks with my husband. Every summer my aunt lets us use her beach house and we gather together the whole family for a week. On the way there, we always pass "South of the Border" a truck stop/theme park, and as a Spanish teacher, I always struggle with a little inner turmoil. It's outstanding kitschiness is simply overwhelming and fabulous, and yet Pedro, and the Giant sombrero elevator ride are just ever so slightly perpetuating what could be considered a negative stereotype of our Mexican friends. At any rate, I think it's worth mentioning because you can't miss it for the hundred miles of signs you pass leading up to it from both directions! Anyone share my fascination with this loco locale?

Blog Inspiration

My husband recently started a blog to re-tell the events surrounding his stroke and battle with testicular cancer (benspeece.blogspot.com). It has been amazing and inspiring to me for several reasons. First of all, he has become a new man. I think that sharing his story has been a powerful experience for him, and therefore is continuing to drive him down rehab road which is a long and arduous trip. But in a different way it has also been inspiring for me because it has pushed me to delve into the blogosphere where I think I might have found a creative outlet for my seldom satiated yearn for beauty and design.

So, I can't promise that this will be anything too new or fabulous, and as the name implies, I am not a professional designer. But I do hope to share some of those beautiful and inspiring elements that keep me up at night re-designing imaginary rooms, and transforming in my mind our doggie-destroyed back yard into a pooch's paradise.

Since this is my very first post, I will indulge myself and share a few pictures of our family.
