Brain Dead

Just in case anyone is wondering why I haven't posted in a while, it's because I will never catch up on all of my reading for classes long enough to have a creative thought!!! Someone please inspire me and give me a good idea for a post.
I'd like to post on the fact that I finally made my maiden voyage to IKEA, but I don't think I can do it justice right now. So, maybe if I can finish one of the 3 books and 5 million journal articles I have to read by next Saturday, I'll attempt it. (I'm sorry if this is sounding too whiny.)

The books I'm reading aren't quite this picturesque, but you get the idea. Someone, please inspire me!

  1. One bit of (very important) inspiration:

Don't read everything! Ph.D. courses are notorious for assigning more reading than can be read. If your professor has marked anything as 'optional' or 'for your own benefit' or 'to help you better understand the primary material,' read it at your own leisure--don't consider it mandatory (if it was, they would say so).

Another tip, especially for journal articles: read that introduction! If you can really get the feel for the first 2 or 3 pages of something (and then make sure to review the last few pages), you can often get away with not reading the middle.

I know these sound like 'bad student' tips, but they really are a matter of survival, and part of the 'unwritten code' of graduate school.

Remember that any classes--especially classes that are essay- or seminar-based--are ultimately all about you producing something you can use in the future professionally (article, conference paper, etc.). Keep your focus on that.

Oh, and then get back to posting.
